YOUNGSTOWN - Another major player in the oil and gas industry has decided to set up shop in the Mahoning Valley, bringing about 150 jobs with it.
Geneva, Switzerland-based Weatherford International Ltd. plans to put a "multipurpose operations facility" into a building it bought April 20 at 1110 Performance Place in Youngstown's Salt Springs Industrial Park.
The company said it will employ about 150 at the facility, which tentatively is scheduled to start operating in late September.
About 75 percent of the work force will be hourly, and the rest salaried management, the company said.
Weatherford said it will provide full training for the workers lasting three to four months "to ensure new employees are properly trained and acclimated into their role."
The company said it will hold local job fairs but doesn't have any scheduled at this time.
Spokeswoman Melanie Kania said the company provides drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention services and products to drillers.
Intervention involves following regulations for plugging and abandoning a well that is finished producing, she said.
She noted the company also has products that help enhance production of a well that's in its late stage before being plugged.
Weatherford, which employs 60,000-plus in more than 100 countries, is another in a series of energy companies that are creating more than 1,500 jobs since entering the Mahoning Valley in recent months to extract oil and gas from the rich Utica shale formation.
